The Farmington NM Loop is located in Northwestern New Mexico. This loop starts on the outskirts of Farmington and follows the La Plata River valley North just past the town of La Plata. Turning Southeast, this route travels to Aztec where riders can visit the Aztec Ruins National Monument before starting North to follow the Animas River valley into Colorado. This part of the ride follows a curvy side road for part of the route and eventually joins Highway 550.
After crossing the Animas River, the path climbs over a nearby hill and then drops down into a canyon for a curvy ride before emerging atop a plateau on the far side and heading toward Ignacio. Although this loop does not go into Ignacio, it’s just a short distance to the North, so if riders are low on gas or need a stop, they can head into Ignacio to get topped up.
Leaving Ignacio, the route heads South through a low valley before climbing up the rolling hills to the undulating road along the top. This gentle curving terrain continues all the way to the Navajo Dam. After crossing the dam, the road climbs up a couple of switchbacks and then curves through the valleys and mesas all the way to Highway 64.
Highway 64 is more of a main road, but it still provides some fun curves before the route turns back to the Northwest for more fun and curves. Eventually riders cross the San Juan River and follow it for a short distance before crossing the desert back to Aztec. From Aztec it is a short ride back to Farmington and the starting point of the ride.
